The Autumn of Childhood

Oh how joyful the autumn of childhood days,

running, jumping, laughing in piles of burnished bronze, ruby, gold!

Sunlit rainbows of fall color dancing in chilly breezes,

inviting us to play in sunlight spilling, rain pouring,

swirling delight under silvery moon shining.

Oh how careless we frolicked, mindless of hours,

leaping, bounding, skipping, heedless of cold and damp!

Crashing through castles of foliage, keen with magic

wonder bursting sharp, full, bright

vivid and shining as our kaleidoscopic eyes.

Oh how quick and merciless the passage of time,

ticking, chugging, rushing - a roaring steam train!

Autumn turning to winter in a flurry of fallen snow,

each delicate flake glistens a memory faded,

youth's distant shadow of simplicity, astonishing love.

✍Writing-in-progress: I'm continuing to focus on writing poetry and short prose, with thoughts percolating that I might compile them into a new collection. Although I've published a few poems and short works separately in journals, magazines & anthologies, I have not compiled or published a full collection since Into the Light in 2017.

With at least two handwritten journals of poetry filled and numerous other shorts written (and stored safely on my desktop) since, sharing them in a new collection may become my top writing goal for 2022.

🎡Singing-in-progress: It's beginning to look a lot like...Christmas! At least, if you take a look at the scores on my piano (although atop it you'll also find pumpkin, kitty cat & skeleton dΓ©cor). For any choral singer, this is when we get to dive deep into rehearsing new arrangements of old carols, sacred masterworks like The Messiah, and contemporary holiday songs.

I'm happily anticipating Christmas projects with both of the virtual choirs I've enjoyed singing with in 2020 & 2021, The Stay at Home Choir & The Choir of the Earth. Both projects will have digital premieres in the month of December, and preceding that will be the release of SAHC's first album release and COTE's Strauss: Four Last Songs concert in November. The fall season will be filled with beautiful music, which is definitely one of the reasons it is always such a joyful time of year to look forward to!

*Update* Here is a link to a playlist of my completed musical tracks from COTE's Strauss: Four Last Songs. These songs are among the most beautiful ever written for the soprano voice, and I'm very proud to have learned and sung them. My German diction is far from perfect, and these songs were challenging in both text and phrasing, but I'm happy to share what I accomplished. I hope those who listen enjoy!
